MEET THE OWNERS OF R1SE YOGA & PILATES

4 Dec 2020 | Student Life

R1SE Hot Yoga & Pilates in Sheffield first opened in January 2018. Their mission? To help you be your best self. In this Q&A we asked Jenny Downham what the driving force was behind her and husband Chris starting R1SE yoga, and what she believes are the main benefits of yoga practise. Here’s what she had to say…

Tell us about your business.

My husband Chris and I started R1SE back in Dec 2017. We both enjoyed practising yoga but decided that there was room in the industry for a non-spiritual, fun and funky studio. We wanted to create somewhere that people could come and enjoy themselves, whilst moving their bodies and calming their minds.

What do you types of classes do you offer at R1SE Yoga?

Over the last 3 years we’ve developed the timetable to include:

  • Fast, cardio sessions called ‘Power’
  • Technical and challenging ‘Flex’, where you work towards a low arm balance or inversion known as our ‘wildcard’
  • A smooth, flowing session, taking longer more relaxing holds in poses called ‘Chill’
  • A ‘Pilates’ session where you can expect to work the core focusing on spinal alignment
  • Our ‘Bliss’ sessions are super slow and a great way to relax the mind and body
  • ’Sculpt’ is an awesome yoga with weights class, building strength, counter acting all the ‘hunching’ we do over screens and increasing our flexibility to boot!
  • Finally ‘Fusion’ offers a funky combination of our Flex, Power & Chill classes – bringing together the strength and balance of Flex; the fun, fast flow of Power and the deep stretchy relaxation of Chill
What are some of the main benefits of yoga?

Yoga can be an amazing tool for the prevention of disease, increasing flexibility, strength, resolve and improved posture. Your brain becomes more in tune with your body and long term you may see improvements in your bone health, blood flow and immunity. It supports a healthy lifestyle and generally makes you happier – I challenge you not to smile in our R1SE classes!

In an ideal world, how often should I practise yoga?

As much as you like! It very much depends on what your goals are. I would say regularly 3 times a week if you’re coming to the studio but if you’re squeezing in a cheeky home practice…yoga every damn day (even if it’s only a 10 min blast).

Do you need to be particularly fit to start yoga?

Not at all. We have a variety of ages, shapes, sizes and fitness levels coming to R1SE and we have classes to suit everyone’s needs.  It may be that you want to start off with a slower class, so that you can come to terms with some of the poses and see how your body is feeling in the positions. If you’re the type of person who enjoys a challenge ‘Power’, ’Sculpt’ or ‘Flex’ may be more your thing.

I’m not very flexible – does it matter?

Of course not. You are encouraged to listen to your body at all times and respect your boundaries. However, a regular practise will bring flexibility and because all of our in-studio classes are done in the heat, your muscles will be more ready to increase their range anyway.

How is yoga different from stretching or other kinds of fitness?

Well due to the variety of classes that we offer at R1SE we cover a lot of fitness elements. However, I guess that the mind body connection, thousands of years of history where poses have been designed around the needs of the human body and bringing the elements of east meets west makes yoga super, freakin’ awesome!
