THE OWNER OF FEELS LIKE HOME

Feels Like Home is a plant shop in Sheffield specialising in fresh, quality house plants. In this Q&A we asked owner Marie Broadhurst what the driving force was behind her starting Feels Like Home, and how she overcomes setbacks. Here’s what she had to say…

Tell us about your business.

Feels Like Home is a house plant specialist shop based in Walkley, Sheffield run by my husband Marc and I (Marie). Our aim is to delight and sooth the senses by offering as much choice as possible in plants. We always have the right plant for any space or place.

What was the driving force behind your business?

House plants have become increasingly popular over the last few years. The health and wellbeing benefits of having plants in your home or work space are endless! We are obsessed with getting everyone to have a plant in their lives and with our help and advice, keeping it alive and enjoying it for many years.

What are your core business values?

Our core business values are:

People – Our customers always come first, we want to be there through every step of the journey of being a plant parent, from making the purchase, through to expert after sales care.

Quality & Choice – We will ensure, we always offer great choice and quality of plant that will suit every budget and requirement.

Knowledge – To empower and inform our customers to be the best plant person they can be, by making the right choices and knowing how to continue to care for them.

Generous – As a small business we always want to give as much back to our customers and community as we can.

How do you overcome setbacks?

We don’t see ‘setbacks’, only opportunities. Our business has grown through some incredibly challenging personal events, and then our first high street shop was due to open just as the first covid lockdown hit. If somethings not working, or needs changing then just go for it until you get back on track.

If you had one piece of advice for students setting out their own business what would it be?

Starting your own business is easier than you may think, and do not ever worry that you are not good enough or don’t have the experience. Everything can be learnt, just believe in yourself and your business and it will succeed.

Are there any other brands within your sector that you are following at the moment?

Yes, we follow all of them, in fact anything plant related we will follow.

What has been your biggest achievement so far?

Moving from a small kitchen table business to the high street and online in the last 12- 18 months during the covid pandemic has been a huge achievement. When we got the website rolling, it changed everything and made us realise that our dreams of working for ourselves fulltime could be achieved.
