THE MOST ANTICIPATED FILMS OF 2020

6 Mar 2020 | Student Advice

If January is any indication of what 2020 has in store for films, then be prepared for everything from childhood remakes to classic sequels. Bad Boys 2, Little Women and Oscar nominated film 1917 have already been released and it is only Spring. Keep reading for my top picks for 2020.

Top Gun: Maverick

Coming back to the big screens is an old classic with Tom Cruise. The anticipation for this film is massive, as people of all ages anxiously wait to see what Maverick has in store for us. Whether you watched the film as a child, your mum won’t stop talking about it, or you’re simply a Tom Cruise fan; this film is widely anticipated.

Release date: 17 July 2020

Directed by: Joseph Kosinski

Starring: Tom Cruise, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Val Kilmer, Jay Ellis, Miles Teller, Monica Barbaro

A Quiet Place 2

If you come to university with a car, be aware of how much money you will be spending when there are cheaper and greener travel alternatives. Teach yourself routes to walk, or use buses in the area, or invest in a bicycle. In a city environment it is easy to forget about your carbon footprint when everybody else isn’t making an effort, but as a student this will also be helpful for your bank account. Share taxis with friends after nights out, or even better, just walk home together.

Release date: 20 March 2020

Directed by: John Krasinski

Starring: Emily Blunt, Noah Jupe, Millicent Simmonds, Cillian Murphy, Djimon Hounsou

Wonder Woman 1984

It’s hard to believe that the Wonder Woman film franchise can become any better, but seconds into the trailer you are immediately intrigued. The 80’s theme instilled in the movie gives it a very interesting aesthetic. Wonder Woman is a feel good, motivational and inspiring film that leaves you feeling invincible after watching it. There aren’t many female action hero films, so it’s very refreshing to watch a strong female lead that is both fun and powerful.

Release date: 5 June 2020

Directed by: Patty Jenkins

Starring: Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig

Birds of Prey

Another “super-hero” film being released this year is Birds of Prey. The Harley Quinn spectacle has been one long awaited film ever since the release of “Suicide Squad”. Margot Robbie’s performance of the psychotic villain left audiences craving for more Harley. The tale is told through Harley’s colourful and insane perspective. Similarly to suicide squad, birds of prey contains characters who are meant to be the typical ‘bad guy’ but in the movie are portrayed as the ‘anti-hero’.

Release date: 7 February 2020

Directed by: Cathy Yan

Starring: Margot Robbie, Jurnee Smollett-Ball, Mary Elizabeth Winstead

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run

In this new SpongeBob adventure, Garry the snail is “snail-napped” causing SpongeBob to go into a frenzy looking for him, with the help of his friends. Follow them on their quest as they travel to the lost city of Atlantic City. This film guarantees a fun and easy watch.

Release date: 22 May 2020

Directed by: Tim Hill

Starring: Tom Kenny, Bill Fagerbakke, Clancy Brown, Rodger Bumpass, Carolyn Lawrence, Mr. Lawrence

Scoob!

We’re all familiar with Scooby-Doo and the Mystery gang, and now a new animated adventure is being released about the origins of the group. The story is centered around how Scooby and Shaggy’s friendship is formed and how the gang came together to solve mysteries. A must see for all of those who used to watch Scooby Doo when they were younger.

Release date: 15 May 2020

Directed by: Tony Cervone

Starring: Zac Efron, Amanda Seyfried, Gina Rodriguez, Frank Welker, Will Forte, Mark Wahlberg

There are a lot of films to look out for this year that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and with different tastes. These are just some of the few that I am personally really excited to watch and suggest you go watch as well!
