MEET THE FOUNDERS OF PLATEAWAY

During various restrictions forcing restaurant closures, plenty of our favourites have turned their hand to the DIY meal kit. Following this trend, Harry Slagel, Lewis Slagel and Nick Leigh decided to create a platform where you could find your favourite restaurant dishes all in one place. In this Q&A we asked the three founders what the driving force was behind them starting Plateaway, and what advice they’d give to students setting out to start their own business. Here’s what they had to say…

Tell us about your business.

Plateaway is a centralised platform for all DIY restaurant meal kits. Our kits provide customers with all the necessary ‘secret’ ingredients, together with simple instruction guides to recreate your favourite meals at home. We give you the best choice from well-known brands such as Patt y& Bun, Blondies Kitchen and Homeslice. We also offer a wide range of cuisines including middle eastern, Japanese, Italian, drinks and desserts!

What was the driving force behind your business?

During lockdown, all the restaurants began to create their DIY restaurant meal kits, featuring all the ingredients to create their signature restaurant dishes. So not only could we satisfy our cravings, we also could have fun in the kitchen, and support the hospitality industry. Plateway was born when one of the founders decided that there needed to be a centralised platform where all these kits were available.

What are your core business values?

Our main core values include teamwork, innovation, passion and commitment to our customers and our restaurant partners!

How do you overcome setbacks?

Focus on the learning from the setback! Setbacks happen to everyone at some point in life and facing these setbacks is also a part of the path to success. Learn from your mistakes and celebrate the small wins!

If you had one piece of advice for students setting out their own business what would it be? 

Go for it whilst you’re young with little commitments. No one ever really has the entire plan or can predict what will happen, before they start a business! Obviously, you need to research the market, and have some sort of a plan in place. But if you try to make everything perfect before you launch your business, you may never get around to starting at all!

Are there any other brands within your sector that you are following at the moment?

A few months into Plateaway, we started following two brands that really caught our attention – ‘Lockdown Liquor’ and ‘World of Zing.’ We loved the concept of them both as they offered delicious pre-mixed cocktail deliveries to your home. We eventually partnered up with them both!

What has been your biggest achievement so far?

Our biggest achievement so far is getting 27 restaurants/ London eateries on Plateaway in only 4 months! We are constantly growing week-by-week and never thought we would have so many restaurants on our platform so early on!
