MEET THE FOUNDER OF COLOURS OF SHEFFIELD
What started as a fun project for Mary Tear, has now turned into a successful business venture. In this Q&A we asked Mary what the driving force was behind her starting Colours of Sheffield, and what advice she’d give to students setting out to start their own business. Here’s what she had to say…
Tell us about your business.
I match Pantone cards to the beautiful colours in Sheffield and have recently developed this into creating prints, tote bags and postcards.
What was the driving force behind your business?
It started as a fun project to get me exploring the city more. I knew it was a fun idea and lots of people seemed to like it so I decided to run with it, create an Instagram account and eventually create some art from it.
What are your core business values?
I always try to use local companies for printing my stock and I like to use my Instagram to promote other small businesses.
How do you overcome setbacks?
I rely on advice from friends and family, and other small businesses, to work through any problems.
If you had one piece of advice for students setting out their own business what would it be?
Make sure you continue to have some hobbies and enjoyment outside of your business. It can be fun to turn your hobbies into a business but it’s important to notice that it can end up taking up a lot of your time so make sure you schedule in time to shut off!
What has been your biggest achievement so far?
My biggest achievement so far was reaching 1000 sales last month. I only started in April so still can’t believe how many people like the idea and have supported me by putting my art on their walls. It means the world!
