THE CREATOR OF LAZYSTUFF

21 Feb 2021 | Meet

Lazystuff is an independent creative company specialising in bespoke products inspired by the British High Street. In this Q&A we asked creator Rob Castles what the driving force was behind him starting Lazystuff, and how he overcomes setbacks. Here’s what he had to say…

Tell us about your business.

Lazystuff.com creates luxury illustrated gifts men love featuring historic pubs, iconic landmarks, stylish slogans and cafe culture.

What was the driving force behind your business?

It’s more a hobby than a business, so it’s something I enjoy. I’m also passionate about local history and my illustration of pubs and buildings allows me to immerse myself in this. Although it makes money, I have to supplement it with my main career as a Graphic Designer.

What are your core business values?

Design things people love.

How do you overcome setbacks?

Creating products is fun, but you never know for sure how successful something will be. It’s a lot of work (and sometimes costs) promoting new products, and if they don’t sell, then you have to cover the time and money. However, I try and learn from this. I hopefully create fairly timeless products – and sometimes they can suddenly take off when you least expect it. So keep at it!

If you had one piece of advice for students setting out their own business what would it be?

In my opinion – work for someone else first. It teaches you how to please people, and whatever you do in business, that’s always the same primary objective.

Are there any other brands outside of your sector that you are following at the moment?

In terms of illustration I follow loads of people on Instagram – but I couldn’t name one specific brand.

What has been your biggest achievement so far?

Selling my very first Lazystuff poster on sale in a local gift shop… and on one Saturday before Christmas I sold loads of products online, so had my biggest daily turnover.
