IF YOU DON’T GET THE GRADES TO GET INTO YOUR UNIVERSITY OF CHOICE, DON’T PANIC!

You can still get onto a course through Clearing. We’ve highlighted the key things you need to know about Clearing below, so you’ll have everything you need.

STEP 1 – REGISTER WITH UCAS

If you haven’t already done so, you’ll need to register with UCAS to make an application.

You’ll need to complete every aspect of the application, including the Personal Statement, but you won’t have the option to add any course choices.

STEP 2 – HAVE ALL YOUR QUALIFICATION DETAILS AT HAND

When you’re phoning around to Universities, you’ll need to give each of them your qualification information.

If you don’t have these at the ready, when you hang up and go to look for them someone else may take your place!

STEP 3 – PHONE ANY UNIVERSITIES THAT YOU ARE INTERESTED IN DIRECTLY

You’ll need to provide them with your Clearing number (you get this once you register online with UCAS) and your Personal ID number.

Ask if the Universities you applied to earlier in the year will still accept you – you never know, the might reconsider you, even for the same course!

STEP 4 – PHONE AS MANY INSTITUTIONS AS YOU LIKE

Have a good look around at different Universities in different locations across the country.

Try to get a few informal offers over the phone from a variety of Unis, then make a decision – you don’t have to settle for the first offer you get.

STEP 5 – USE CLEARING VACANCIES SEARCH TOOLS

Use the UCAS or Telegraph Clearing vacancies search tool to look for a University place by course name, institution or location.

STEP 6 – BE PREPARED TO GO FOR A LAST MINUTE INTERVIEW

Some courses require a face-to-face interview, such as Teaching courses, so be ready to go for one.

There may only be one interview date available, so you will need to be flexible.

STEP 7 – ADD A CLEARING CHOICE ON UCAS TRACK

Only do this once you’ve chosen a University and received confirmation from them that they are happy to offer you a place.

In UCAS, click ‘Add Clearing choice’ and fill in the course details – be sure to do this by the date the University gave to you on the phone.

DO’S AND DON’T’S

Do stay positive. Clearing can be complicated and it’s quite a long process, but you will eventually find a course and University that suits you!

Don’t just pick any course for the sake of it; choose a course that you have an interest in and that you think you will enjoy.

Do consider part-time study if the full-time option for the course you want is full. You can get a part-time job alongside your studies to help fund your time at University.

Don’t commit to any social plans the weekends after results day, as a lot of Universities will hold open days for Clearing candidates.
