MEET THE OWNERS OF TRIP DRINKS

17 Oct 2020 | Student Life

CBD, which is extracted from the cannabis plant, has been popping up in holistic remedies, beauty and skincare products and food and drink products over the last couple of years. Unlike THC though, CBD is not psychoactive and does not appear to be addictive. Studies have shown that there are a number of benefits associated with CBD consumption, including pain relief, reducing anxiety and even treating acne. In this Q&A we asked the owners Olivia Ferdi and Dan Khoury, what the driving force was behind them starting TRIP drinks and what their biggest achievement to date has been. Here’s what they had to say…

Tell us about your business?

We created TRIP to share a bit of calm in the everyday chaos through CBD experiences that are just as enjoyable to taste as the feeling after. TRIP has a range of delicious CBD drinks and oils, that are convenient, sociable and accessible ways to explore CBD.

What was the driving force for you to start your business?

In 2018, we discovered the benefits of CBD after my husband and co-founder Dan underwent knee surgery just weeks before our wedding. CBD helped with the pain and inflammation, and he credits it with getting him down the aisle, crutches-free! We then began taking CBD to help alleviate daily stress and found the benefits to be incredible but couldn’t find a brand which spoke to our values. We left our jobs in law & finance and founded TRIP to change the game of CBD!

What are your businesses’ core values?

TRIP was created to supply customers with authentically functional products, that taste as good as they make you feel. Taking CBD should be a moment of calm in the middle of your day, so we wanted to create a CBD experience where every element is enjoyable.

How do you overcome setbacks?

Each setback has taught us that it is all about perspective; instead of focusing on the negative, we invest our energy into positive actions, adapting, and refocusing strategy. It also helps to have a great team to work through any problems together and celebrate the successes with!

If you had one piece of advice for students setting out their own business, what would it be?

Test it out! Make sure there is a need for your product, and then test it endlessly on family and friends – take on as much feedback as you can get. Be prepared for a lot of people who might challenge your vision, but just be open, be kind and build your network.

Are there any other brands within your sector that you are following at the moment?

We were dubbed the “Glossier of CBD” in a recent article in DAZED, which was a huge compliment as we really admire how Glossier changed the game in beauty – in particular the consistency of their brand vision from packaging to their social media presence. Similarly, we want every part of our product to encapsulate the way that TRIP makes you feel, from the packaging, the flavour, the feeling afterwards, right through to our social feed – we want it all to have a calming effect on your senses.

What has your biggest achievement been so far?

TRIP turned one year old just recently, and it has been an amazing year. Of course, you have your ups and downs, but there have been many ups, it is hard to choose just one! We are really thankful for the community we have been able to build this year, having brought hundreds of thousands of people to enjoy the benefits of CBD. We love talking to and understanding our community more and more; it helps us develop our range and it’s really rewarding to hear when you can make a difference with in someone’s life.

We have also been able to build relationships with some amazing partners and stockists, including heritage brands such as Selfridges, Harvey Nichols, Liberty’s and Fenwicks, which has reinforced our mission at TRIP and CBD’s position as an accepted solution to support wellbeing!
