MEET THE OWNER OF EMMY’S BRIGADIERO

20 Aug 2020 | Student Life

Since launching in 2016, this Hertfordshire based business has been selling beautiful handcrafted Brazilian truffles to the masses. In this Q&A we asked owner, Emmy, what the driving force was behind her starting Emmy’s Brigadeiro and how she overcomes setbacks. Here’s what she had to say…

Tell us about your business?

I make Brazilian gourmet truffles, also known as brigadeiros. About 10 years ago I met my Brazilian husband, who introduced me to this little delicacy. I’d never heard of them before but as soon as I tasted one, I fell in love with them! I was surprised to find out just how many people had never heard of brigadeiros before and felt that they were missing out. I decided to take a course to learn how to make brigadeiros like a pro, so that I could introduce them to the UK. I spent a lot of time figuring out my own flavours and recipes. Finally in 2016 I launched my brigadeiro business.

What was the driving force for you to start your business?

I always knew that I wanted to run my own business but never found a product or service that I was really passionate about. I am not particularly confident at selling, so I needed a product that could do the talking. Not only are brigadeiros pretty to look at, they are also utterly delicious. They make the perfect gift and are great as a dessert for special occasions. I am happy to say that the driving force for me to start my brigadeiro business is my passion and love for this special sweet.

What are your business’ core values?/What are the key values that motivate you?

1. Honesty and trust
2. Commitment to my customers
3. Passion
4. Constant growth and improvement
5. Quality
6. Simplicity

How do you overcome setbacks?

Setbacks happen and are to be expected by every entrepreneur at some point in business. The best way I’ve found to overcome setbacks is to recognise and learn from them. When you make a mistake or are unsure of something, don’t be afraid to ask for help from others who are working in a similar field. I have been helped out so many times by people who I follow and who’s work I admire. In my experience people are nice, kind and helpful, particularly small business owners. Good advice can save time, money and reputation.

If you had one piece of advice for students setting out their own business, what would it be?

Setting up a business can be very exciting but make sure not to rush it. It’s important to get things right from the beginning!

Are there any other brands outside your sector that you are following at the moment?

I am extrememly proud of being an @andsotoshop partner, where independent British brands are working together to encourage the nation to shop ethically and support small businesses.

What has your biggest achievement been so far?

My biggest achievement so far was catering to an order of 600 brigadeiros for a corporate event.
