MEET THE FOUNDER OF EVOLVE ORGANIC BEAUTY

The natural beauty industry is on the rise, with consumers rejecting chemical-filled skincare products. One company that has been changing the beauty industry since 2009 is Evolve Organic Beauty. They are committed to sustainable manufacturing; only using recyclable glass and card packaging. All products are 100% vegan, with all ingredients derived from fair-trade and sustainable sources. In this Q&A we asked Laura Rudoe, what the driving force was behind her starting Evolve Organic Beauty and how she overcomes setbacks. Here’s what she had to say…

Tell us about your business?

Evolve Organic Beauty is all about helping people to make small changes in their lives to be healthier and greener. I have integrated sustainable and natural living into my lifestyle over the past 15-20 years and wanted to make natural beauty desirable and accessible for as many people as possible.

What was the driving force for you to start your business?

When I was younger, I suffered with bad skin and so I have always been interested in skincare and learning about the best ingredients and natural solutions for skin problems. After I graduated from Harvard Business School, I followed my passion for ethical businesses that make a difference and became the founding employee of a brand called NUDE, another natural beauty brand. I loved being a part of the clean beauty revolution and once NUDE was launched, I decided to take the plunge and create my own natural beauty brand, Evolve Organic Beauty.

What are the key values that motivate you?

All of our products are made in our Hertfordshire-based eco studio. They’re natural, organic, 100% vegan, cruelty free and lovingly created by hand using the finest ingredients! We strive to do ‘good’ at every stage of our business – treating our people and our planet with respect.

How do you overcome setbacks?

A natural part of owning and growing a small business is overcoming setbacks. No matter how well you plan, some hurdles will be unavoidable. We try to refer to these hurdles as ‘opportunities’, as we can learn from our mistakes and focus on how we can creatively overcome them! Whilst we have strategies, forecasts and endless plans, it is important for us to maintain a flexible mindset.

If you had one piece of advice for students setting out their own business, what would it be?

When we graduated from business school, they told us to do something you love. Make your passion your business. My passion is helping people with their skin to make a difference in the world.

Are there any other brands within your sector that you are following at the moment?

I am interested in and inspired by a broad range of brands from different sectors, and we have been lucky enough to partner with some of my favourite brands: from Deliciously Ella to Baukjen fashion. I think it is so important to learn from various different types of businesses and brands. As sustainability is at the heart of everything we do, eco-friendly brands across all sectors can ignite campaign ideas and even support new product development.

What has your biggest achievement been so far?

In the early years, it was very challenging to initially grow the business and we boot strapped everything as the business is completely self-funded which was tough, but I am very grateful now that we did it that way as it means we are completely independent and I have also done most of the roles in the business myself.
