Loaded Hype is a customer-centric branding and marketing agency, which was founded in 2017 by duo Laura Wood and Oliver Kurt. Since then they have grown their client list to include a number of exciting and successful businesses from various industries, including Retail and Hospitality. In this Q&A we asked them how they got to where they are today and to share any of their own tips. Here’s what they had to say…

Tell us about your business?

Loaded Hype is a branding and marketing agency that provides an endtoend service for customercentric businesses. We’ve been working in marketing and communication for more than a decade now and are both very passionate about working with growing businesses at the start of their marketing journey to deliver exciting and gamechanging campaigns that actually get results.

What was the driving force for you to start your business?

We started the business together after working in the same marketing team fora number of years and realising that we have a very similar vision for what good looks like. It’s our firm belief that the marketing strategy and customer journey for any business should be at the core of how they operate.

We recognised that there are a number of businesses out there that have big ideas and aspirations but not always the marketing budgets to fulfil them or the manpower to make it happen.

So that’s where we come in! We have three distinct areas to the business strategic direction and branding; video and podcast production and marketing execution.

Through these services, we can provide the complete service or the missing tools needed for ambitious brands to take their business to the next level.

Laura actually studied film at ManchesterMetropolitan University but it was the business side of the industry that fascinated her the most it’s one thing bringing a concept to life but how do you get people to care about it as much as you do? Marketing became the logical career choice and thatfascination is still true today.

Just a few miles down the road at the University of Salford, Oli went down a similar path and found a passion for marketing whilst studying English and Journalism. It was clear to him at this point that a clear communication strategy helps in the world of business and it’s something that he brings to Loaded Hype every day.

What are your business’ core values?

We have fourbeliefs that we stand by:

  • Put the customer first
  • Every problem can be solved
  • Always operate with transparency
  • Empower people to get results

Our mission statement is “We never say ‘impossible’ and always have an answer for ‘how’”.

How do you overcome setbacks?

It goes in line with our mission statement we don’t saysomething is tooimpossible and we’ll always work out a ‘how’ for our problems. A big part of this problemsolving mentality is down to how important we believe communication is. Conversations might be difficult but talking about our issues, challenges and troubles means we can work on things together, and as a team, to work out the best way forward.

The same goes for our clientshonest conversations about setbacks in campaigns with proactive suggestions on how we can move forwards makes everyone more successful in the long run.

If you had one piece of advice for students setting out their own business, what would it be?

We set up our business as a pair so the biggest advice to anyone thinking of doing the same is make sure you always prioritise time to talk to each other. Even if you don’t agree to begin with, you need to be able to debate, discuss and understand how you’re willing to compromise so you can both move forward together.

Are there any other brands outside your sector that you are following at the moment?

Hundreds!! Following, engagingand learning from other brands is what we do every day but as lovers of all things independent and growing, our current top five to obsess over are:

  • Fusion Students (of course, our faves)
  • Trouva
  • Cast Experiences
  • Patch Plants
  • Oatly

Then for the big ones that have shaped and completely revolutionised how we work (because how could we not):

  • Amazon
  • The Facebook network
  • WeWork
  • Airbnb
  • NBA (mainly because The Last Dance on Netflix has ignited a new passion for basketball in one of us!)

What has your biggest achievement been so far?

Our first major goal was hiring our first person and we’re so happy that Emily joined us after six months of running the business and is still with us now!

We are big advocates of growing a company by empowering your people so still operate with that mentality with everyone that joins the team.

A silly milestone that we still see is a big achievement was being able to purchase a neon branded sign for our office. It symbolised so much to us as a company and still sits pride of placewe’re just not sat next to it every day at the minute!

Whilst many of us have been content with binge watching the latest Netflix series or getting to the bottom of our reading lists during the pandemic, some have taken the brave step to turn their skills into a business. Hannah Searson is one such person who, having...
