AGOGOS SPILLS THE BEANS
If you’re living at Luna, you’re likely to have already tried Agogos delicious Caribbean food. Since opening in 2018, this restaurant owned by duo Jide and Nahom, has grown into a hot spot for students and locals alike. In this Q&A we asked Jide how they got to where they are today and to share any of his own tips with young entrepreneurs. Here’s what he had to say…
Tell us about your business?
Agogos is an African-Caribbean eat in takeout and catering business based in Hatfield. The idea came about in our final year of Uni, after our placement years.
What was the driving force for you to start your business?
The driving force behind us starting our business was going to university and having to travel back home to London to get some of our favourite dishes. The second was looking at the niche (as in Afro-Caribbean takeaways) and not being happy with the image and perception of business representing the industry. We set out to change this by being the benchmark in the niche first and industry second.
What are your business’ core values?/What are the key values that motivate you?
Hardwork, willingness to win and inspire the next generation
How do you overcome setbacks?
We have learnt to overcome setbacks by seeing them as lessons and opportunities to grow and do better. You know how the saying goes “The glass is either half full or half empty.
If you had one piece of advice for students setting out their own business, what would it be?
Ensure that you are solving a problem and be prepared to make sacrifices! Also, take advantage of every opportunity you have. Whilst studying at the University of Hertfordshire we entered “Flare”, the Entrepreneurial Competition, which was our first testing ground to prove our idea was viable. It also connected us with a network of forward-thinking and supportive friends. If we both hadn’t come to the University of Hertfordshire, we would never have met each other and Agogos may never have been birthed.
Are there any other brands outside your sector that you are following at the moment?
Fusion Students! In all honesty we generally connect with anything that makes us smile, laugh, inspires us, ignites our creativity or engages our mind.
What has your biggest achievement been so far?
Getting this far despite the challenges and to still be standing is definitely a great achievement coupled with the feedback we get from customers. 😊🙏🏽
