A WEEKEND IN CARDIFF… TO IMPRESS YOUR MATES
Home to the soulful vocals of Charlotte Church, the sweet-striking left foot of Ryan Giggs, and the famous words of Roald Dahl, Cardiff is a city that combines quirky eateries with bustling bars and beautiful, historical architecture. The capital of Wales is certainly a weekend visit that will have your mates coming back every weekend!
Let’s start with something tasty, shall we? No point asking your mates to visit if you can’t take them for some scrummy food.
For all the dairy lovers out there, we’d like to introduce you to Madame Fromage – the specialist, and basically Queen, of all things cheesy. We don’t know where we’d brie without it! Whether you’re after a cheese platter, some gooey-goodness of a baked camembert, or a flavoursome baguette, this little gem is grate. You won’t find a gouda place to take your friends!
If the word artisan was a place then it would certainly be The Plan, which is situated in a beautiful Grade II listed building. With everything cooked from scratch and sourced locally, this little gem gives your taste buds every sort of option you could imagine.
Does one friend want brunch and the other fancies a homemade burger with pancakes afterwards? Then no need to make a plan, because The Plan is your plan! Make sure you have your Instagram at the ready because the coffee foam art and the stunningly-crafted meals are definitely something your mates are going to want to show off!
The go-to place for some top-notch takeaway grub and guess what? It’s all vegan! The Greazy Vegan in the Castle Arcade are sick and tired of vegans having to constantly deal with kale chips and avocado dusted quinoa burgers, so they created junk food for vegans!
There’s a constant buzz around this little greazy spoon with customers describing it as outstanding and tasty. The owners are loud and proud to shout about creating delicious takeaway food which is cruelty free. So, if you’re after a vegan kebab or a spin on a bacon double cheeseburger, then get your fast-food on over at Greazy Vegan.
The New York Deli
Pack your bags because you and your mates are about to head to New York! Found in the High St Arcade, The New York Deli is about to take you on a journey of true, authentic pastrami tasting. Mountains of salt beef and swiss cheese bigger than the Brooklyn Bridge, this local favourite should definitely make your list of where to take your friends.
Whether you’re after a bagel, sandwich, or a traditional hoagie – this deli delight has all the New York cravings you could ask for.
After all of that food your pals are going to need something to wash it all down with. Here’s a few top places to have a cheeky drink or two with your mates…
They call themselves a Cardiff Institution and we don’t blame them because it’s the perfect vibe of chill, cosy, and lively. If you and your mates are after a few quiet drinks to catch up, then you’ll feel right at home with scattered lamps, comfy chairs, and of course a great selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.
If it gets to Saturday night and everyone’s feeling a little dance, then Buffalo Bar is still the place to go. Turning into a venue with live bands, open mics, and guest DJs playing the tunes to the early hours – we won’t be surprised if your mates stay there all night! This booming little bar is an ideal place to spend time with your friends and once you’ve taken them there, they’ll finally be able to say they’ve gin there and done that at the famous Buffalo Bar.
Pen & Wig
If classic is what you’re after, then you won’t find a better place than Pen & Wig. Known for its traditional pub atmosphere, grab your mates to make a team for their regular quiz nights. Don’t be fooled into thinking it’s a dull night because it certainly isn’t, and you’ll be in high spirits once you’ve tasted their huge gin selection!
Sunday roasts, breakfasts, and home comforts – they have it all just incase your mates are missing home already.
Described as the best nightclub and bar experience in Cardiff, this lively spot is just around the corner from Zenith accommodation. The most popular days are Wednesdays and Sundays, so make sure you have a little Sunday Funday before your mates head back home after the weekend.
What better way to finish off a weekend with your pals than with an all-day Sunday happy hour?! Grab yourselves 2for1 cocktails and £2.50 pints – with prices like that just make sure your mates don’t miss their trains home!
You can’t have your mates up without showing them the beautiful sites of Wales, it’s just unheard of. After you’ve shown them around your slick accommodation, here’s some places to take in the stunning sites of the Welsh capital…
Are your friends ready to experience the Firing Line? The castle’s main entrance takes you on a historical journey of the Welsh soldier. With a mix of chronicled information from the battle of Waterloo to the recent services in Iraq and Afghanistan, this exhibition trip is certainly worth a visit.
Look in awe at the beautiful medieval and Victorian Gothic brickwork and design, before taking a short walk to Bute Park. Picture-perfect scenery all year round, Bute Park is an idyllic haven of calm and peace among the liveliness of Cardiff’s city centre.
Have your friends ever been on a water taxi before? Take them to Cardiff Bay so they can experience one! You and your mates can immerse yourselves in the serenity of the large freshwater lake and begin your leisurely walk around the various coffee shops, restaurants, and bars.
If a little entertainment is what you’re all after, then look no further than The Red Dragon Centre. Known as Cardiff’s ultimate entertainment destination, you and your mates can take advantage of bowling, casinos, a 12-screen cinema, and of course the lip-licking eateries and thirst-quenching bars.
Cardiff is the ideal city to bring your mates to and you’ll certainly impress them. Whether they’re after a weekend of dancing, a chilled break away, or just a good old catch up with you – Cardiff has it all.
There’s so much Cardiff has to offer that we couldn’t fit it all in, so make sure you check out Cardiff’s map of places to go! Don’t forget to show us the snaps from your weekend on Facebook – we can’t wait to see what you and your mates get up to.
