6 ETHICAL AND ECO-CONSCIOUS CARDIFF EATERIES
At the moment a lot of us are thinking about our health, whether directly or indirectly. As places continue to open up, news reports and nagging loved ones keep reminding us to stay as healthy as possible. With that in mind, how better to stay healthy than by eating well, supporting local businesses and being eco-conscious? Here are just a few suggestions of sustainable, eco-logical and eco-conscious places to shop or eat. All of these are currently open or preparing to open.
Ripple is probably one of the best known ethical shops in Cardiff. This zero-waste store is based on Albany road and sells everything from tea, to freshly ground peanut butter to eco-sensitive clothing. Due to the pandemic, Ripple is currently only open for orders. You can order your shopping list between 9-10am and email it to firstname.lastname@example.org for collection at 3-4pm on the same day (except on Mondays.) Find out more details here.
However, Ripple is just one of the sustainable food shops in Cardiff. As well as producing beautiful reclaimed timber furniture and gifts, EKOLOGI, (formerly known as Hard to Find Shelving) sells delicious and healthy whole food refills and teas. Find out more here.
Plant 2 Plate
If you fancy venturing a little further outside of Cardiff, Plant 2 Plate in Caerphilly is a lovely zero-waste food shop. Here you can refill seasonal goods and buy ready-made meals (vegan/vegetarian/gluten-free/celiac included), as well as local organic products and sustainable items, such as Bamboo toothbrushes and wax wraps. Find out more here.
The Riverside Real Food markets, which are held in Riverside, Roath and Rhiwbina, are now back up and running again (with the appropriate measures in place to protect both traders and shoppers). These measures include, maintaining a two-metre distance, customers only paying with card and only touching food produce after purchasing it.
The Roath Real Food Market runs every Saturday from 9.30am-1pm at Mackintosh Sports Club. The Riverside Real Food Market is at Fitzhamon Embankment (opposite the Principality Stadium) every Sunday from 10am-2pm and the Rhiwbina Read Food Market is on every Friday 10am- 1pm at Heol-y-Felin.
Pettigrew Bakeries is an independent and artisanal bakery on Cowbridge road. It is a bit of a walk but, believe me, the bakes are worth it! Pettigrew’s offer delicious traditional breads, mouth-watering pastries and a great sourdough loaf! It is open from 7:30am-4:30pm for pick-up in shop or you can get home delivery straight to your door.
The Early Bird
Hopefully a lot of you will already have visited The Early Bird. However, you may not know that pretty much all their products are made on-site and with local and organic produce. From TEB’s range of homemade syrups to their sinfully good bakes, it is an ethical and eco-conscious food-lovers heaven. For the moment, they are running a delivery take-away services but, excitingly, they are also opening a sister branch, Friends in Knead, in Barry as well as a Gelato bar at The Goods Shed.
These are just a taste of the incredible eco-conscious, ethical and sustainable food shops in Cardiff, now it’s time for you to discover the rest!
