5 BEST CARDIFF SPOTS FOR ARTS AND CULTURE

10 Aug 2020 | Student Life

Cardiff is known for its vibrant and exciting arts and culture, ranging from local independent music to festivals and exhibitions. The city has so much to offer, and yet holds so many hidden gems that are quietly talked about. Here are my top 5 spots for arts and culture in the capital of Wales.

Craft*folK’s summer festival

From Saturday 8th – Saturday 22nd of August, Cardiff City Centre is hosting the Craft*folK’s Summer Festival. The festival is an outdoor event, celebrating the creativity of small local businesses. Here you can find art and craftwork, handmade fudge, wine and liqueurs, and a range of eclectic work. The festival is confirmed to continue, subject to the guidelines from the Welsh Government, and promises an exciting couple of weeks for creative sellers and emerging artists.

Womanby Street

Every music lovers favourite, Womanby Street, offers you everything you could want from an eclectic and exciting live music scene. Popular nightclub Clwb Ifor Bach always promises a good night out, stylish speakeasy The Bootlegger offers great live music and cocktails, and award-winning brewery Tiny Rebel serves excellent craft beers with a variety of different music nights in themed rooms. Even for the non-drinkers among us, Womanby Street has something to offer you.

St Fagans

A trip down memory lane for a lot of Welsh ex-schoolers, St Fagans is an exciting open-air historical museum just outside of Cardiff. St Fagans explores buildings, lifestyles, culture and architecture of Welsh people throughout periods in history, with buildings including a nonconformist chapel, dating back to 1100, and air raid shelters from the 1940s. Boasting around 40 buildings, the grounds are an exciting and enjoyable learning experience for any age and provides a lovely sense of freedom and reality amongst the Welsh woodlands (especially if it rains).

The Rules of Art? At the National Museum Cardiff

The National Museum in Cardiff will always be a certified good day out, especially for those with an artistic eye. The Rules of Art? is an exhibition boasting 500 years of paintings, sculptures, photography and film, that explores culture, identity and representation. Until the 6th of September, art will be displayed in this exhibition to raise questions about social and political power.

Theatre

Whilst there is still uncertainty as to when theatres will be reopening safely, it is vital to keep the arts alive. Cardiff is home to a wonderful range of amateur and professional theatre, including the Royal Welsh School of Music and Drama, the Sherman Theatre, the Welsh Millennium Centre, the New Theatre and the Other Room. Touring companies often utilise the bigger venues, with London’s West End shows appearing at the Millennium Centre. Smaller amateur companies such as The Other Room at Porters, provide an outlet for inspiring creatives.

We are relying on the arts now more than ever. Whilst events have the potential for cancellation or won’t open for a while, it is vital that we support arts and culture in our cities to keep these industries alive!
