5 BENEFITS OF ADULT COLOURING BOOKS

5 May 2020 | Student Advice

By living with Fusion Students I have been able to get involved with a wide range of crafty activities. Colouring books in particular are a great way to unwind, de-stress and meet other residents. Not only does it give you the chance to relax and unwind, but it also encourages positive and creative stimulation of the right side of the brain. In this blog I’ll share my top five benefits of adult colouring books.

1. It can help to lower stress levels

As students we can often experience high levels of stress and anxiety. Adult colouring books are a perfect way to decrease these feelings, through a sense of creativity, temporary manipulation of negative thoughts and relaxation. They can also help you to improve your attention to detail, as it forces you to focus on the present task.

2. It can be a great distraction

Not only is adult colouring effective with boosting mindfulness, but it can also have positive effects on our mental health and distract an individual from any troubles they may be experiencing. For many students boredom can be a massive downer.  Colouring in can really help distract the mind from stress, anxiety, bingeing too much Netflix and eating unhealthy foods!  The time that you take focusing on adult colouring helps to remove the risk of any excessive and negatives habits, whilst helping you to focus in a safe, creative, calming and productive way.

3. It can remind you of simpler times

Most people would have grown up using colouring books, so implicating colouring into an adult life can be very rewarding. Not only can it evoke memories of simpler times, but can distract and relax you for as long as your mind and body wishes to be.

4. It can aid sleep

It’s something we’ve been told time and time again, but being on your phone before bedtime isn’t great for sleep. Colouring in is a relaxing alternative, that doesn’t reduce your melatonin levels. It also relaxes the amygdala, which is the right side of the brain that controls fear and emotions. By reducing this it can help to bring us into a meditative state and help us to sleep better.

5. It’s a great way to feel a sense of accomplishment

Colouring in gives you the opportunity to complete a project at your own pace, without the stress. You don’t need to be an experienced artist to finish a colouring page, and it provides a great sense of achievement when you do. The instant gratification that you feel, generates positivity and can stay with you for the rest of the day.
